Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until she reached adulthood because her parents were afraid of the negative impact stress might be a cause of. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school. However, she began acting to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her to California again where she began working in the stage. She performed on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was a part of nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. Her father played her on her role on the ABC drama Scandal. That same year she portrayed a child model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother as a young version. The character was picked via auditions having a strong connection with it.
